My first @peertube video!

A short recording in slow-motion of the activity of a nesting aggregation of ground-nesting bees, Colletes thoracicus, the Rufous-backed Cellophane Bee, along my driveway at the end of April 2024. I have been monitoring and observing this population since 2008.

Shade tree (Landscape ecology 🏞️)

A shade tree is a large tree whose primary role is to provide shade in the surrounding environment due to its spreading canopy and crown, where it may give shelter from sunlight in the heat of the summer for people who seek recreational needs in urban parks and house yards, and thus, also protecting them from the sun's harmful UV rays. Amazon forest felled to build road for climate summit

“A new four-lane highway cutting through tens of thousands of acres of protected Amazon rainforest is being built for the COP30 climate summit in the Brazilian city of Belém.”

The Mediterranean Sea is abused as a rubbish dump

"Human-caused marine debris has already reached the deepest point in the Mediterranean Sea. We have also found evidence of the boats' dumping of bags full of rubbish, as revealed by the pile-up of different types of waste followed by an almost rectilinear furrow. Unfortunately, as far as the Mediterranean is concerned, it would not be wrong to say that 'not a single inch of it is clean."

#Butterflies in the #US are disappearing at a ‘catastrophic’ rate
Butterflies are rapidly fluttering out of existence from coast to coast at a rate that scientists worry could upend #ecosystems & undercut #pollination that sustains America’s #crops.
The total number of butterflies in the contiguous US has declined 22% over a 20yr period, as shrinking #habitat, rising #temperatures & a #toxic array of #pesticides kill off the delicate insects.

"Amphibians are the world's most at-risk vertebrates, with more than 40% of species listed as threatened—and losing entire populations could have catastrophic flow-on effects.
Being ectothermic—regulating their body heat by external sources—amphibians are particularly vulnerable to temperature change in their habitats".

"losses of #marine #species contemporary #habitat continue for centuries beyond reaching stable #globalwarming levels ... Any impact assessed at transient warming levels thus largely underestimates the total impact on marine species." @EGU_BioGeo

bg.copernicus.org/articles/22/

bg.copernicus.orgLong-term impacts of global temperature stabilization and overshoot on exploited marine speciesAbstract. Global warming alters ocean conditions, which can have dramatic consequences for marine species. Yet, the centennial-scale effects and reversibility of habitat viability for marine species, particularly those that are important to fisheries, remain uncertain. Using the Aerobic Growth Index, we quantify the impacts of warming and deoxygenation on the contemporary habitat volume of 46 exploited marine species in novel temperature stabilization and overshoot simulations until 2500. We demonstrate that only around half of the simulated loss of contemporary (1995–2014) habitat volume is realized when warming levels are first reached. Moreover, in an overshoot scenario peaking at 2 °C global warming before stabilizing at 1.5 °C, the maximum decrease in contemporary habitat volume occurs more than 150 years post-peak warming. Species' adaptation may strongly mitigate impacts depending on adaptation rate and pressure. According to our study, marine species will be affected for centuries after temperature stabilization and overshoot, with impacts surpassing those during the transient warming phase.

The fact that this hawk was perched in a eucalyptus tree is interesting, since these trees are not native to California but have become a common sight throughout the state. In fact, some people have raised concerns about the impact of eucalyptus trees on local ecosystems, since they can crowd out native plants and animals. But it seems like this particular hawk has found a way to make the most of it!

Hi #sciencemastadon, just migrated to social.edu.nl. A re-introduction: I'm a researcher working at Wageningen University and Research (#wur), studying the #ecology of #marinemammals (mostly #seals) in the Netherlands or #arctic, analysing #spatial distribution and #habitat selection based on #wildlife #tracking or #drone/ #uav/ #satellite data using #rstats

Mayapple is an ephemeral wildflower species in the Southeastern United States that makes either one or two big umbrella leaves, and literally look like a folded umbrella as they emerge from the ground in early spring. They make a single white flower hanging under their leaf that develops into a small apple-like fruit in May. This population occurs in the backyard of a neighbor, emerging from a thick groundcover of English ivy. I managed to convince the landowners, who are removing the ivy themselves, to let me clear the mayapple patch carefully this winter so as not to harm the mayapple roots. The cleared patch is now marked with white flags in picture 3.

This is a before and after example of one of the properties I've done invasive plant removal for, along with a picture of a friend who helped me one day. This property had at least 24 trashcans full of English ivy that needed to get taken away. While clearing it, found some sapling Carolina cherry laurel, around a dozen maple-leaf viburnum saplings, at least 20 cranefly orchid plants, and even some beautiful ghost pipes (a parasitic native plant that makes white waxy flowers). It's nice to help my neighbors out, and this project is part of 7 connected properties that asked for my service. An enormous project, but a project with huge rewards for our native plants and animals to have a large invasive-plant free refuge.

So this post will be an introduction to one topic I want to cover on here: the issue of invasive species. Here in central North Carolina, our yards and the native spaces attached to those yards are covered in foreign species, mostly from Asia, that include English ivy, Chinese privet, glossy privet, nandina, leatherleaf mahonia, Rose of Sharon, Japanese honeysuckle, and many other species. These plants are planted partly for mindless reasons (the stores sell them, and people buy them without knowing they are a huge problem), but partly because people see plants as decoration instead of living things. Yard owners don't want their yard plants full of holes from bugs eating them, and these plants remain pristine because no insect in America has the ability to eat them. Yardowners also want quick gratification and pick plants that grow quickly. When you combine the traits of pest-immunity and quick growth together, you get a plant that escapes the yard and takes over every space it enters. As these plants expand and displace native plants in the few places we don't pave over, the result is starvation of native insects and all of the animals that feed on those insects. Imagine trying to go to a grocery store and realizing all of the food around you is made of plastic. That is the reality for our native bugs, and that is why insect populations have been halved in the last half century. To say this is a dire situation is frankly an understatement, and there are other factors I won't get into on this post that make the issue even worse.

One of my side projects in life is to remove English ivy and restore my neighborhood's native spaces. It's hard work, but I've restored 12 properties so far. If you can, please consider removing harmful species from your yard and planting native, your yard can become a haven for our wildlife.

Humans are making it increasingly difficult for wildlife to live and reproduce.

Sprawl, accelerated fossil fuel mobility via motor engines and roaming introduced canines makes survival for other than humans risky or impossible. The prosthetic apparatuses of 'man' sends its noisy and polluting tentacles into every nook and cranny where bio-diversity still dwells - 24/7.

#PétrusseValley to undergo second phase of #rewilding

The Pétrusse rewilding project and redesign of the adjoining park aim to be finished for the 2027 school year

10/02/2025

"The second phase of the rewilding of the Pétrusse valley, extending from the #BourbonLock to #RuedAnvers in #Luxembourg City, is set to begin in spring.

"The valley has already been #rewilded along a section extending from Rue St. Ulric to the Bourbon lock during the first phase of the larger project, which began in 2020.

"The City of Luxembourg, in collaboration with the Ministry of the #Environment, #Climate, and #Biodiversity, held a press conference on Monday outlining the details of the second phase, which includes the installation of stands and balconies along the route and a new multi-purpose sports field.

"'The rewilding of the Pétrusse valley represents an exceptional project for the City of Luxembourg, aiming to enrich our environment while improving the quality of the citizens’ lives,' Mayor Lydie Polfer said.

"The rewilding initiative came just days after a European Commission report on water quality showed rapidly declining results in Luxembourg.

"The first report, in 2009, indicated that 7% of the country’s surface waters were in good ecological condition, before falling to 3% in 2015 and finally reaching 0% in 2021. The ecological status is influenced by water quality such as #pollution and #habitat #degradation. It is used to define the overall status of water bodies.

"The #EuropeanUnion wants all surface waters to be in good condition by 2027. Under the #EuropeanWaterFrameworkDirective (#WFD) – which sets markers for water quality, the country has to see its standards improve.

"'#Restorations are perfect measures to adapt to the increasing challenges of #ClimateChange while contributing to the improvement of #biodiversity, #WaterQuality and increasing the quality of life of our citizens,' Environment Minister Serges Wilmes said."
