We updated TheSans to support the DIN 91379 standard for transliterating foreign names into Latin, effective for German authorities since November.

If you know Luc(as), you’d rightly expect extra care going into these fonts. And indeed, he designed all the additional glyphs by hand instead of relying on mark positioning.
Upgrades are available for existing licenses.

A deep dive into FontLab Studio 5’s TrueType hinting code: github.com/jenskutilek/fakelab
About 10 years ago, I really wanted to understand how TrueType hinting works in FLS5, and how it compiles its graphical representation to bytecode. Thought I’d write it all down before I forget it. Check it out if you enjoy reading TrueType assembly code :)

A question for the Apple Mac geek nerd typoholic contingent…

Since I got my new Mac, running MacOS Sequoia, some of the older parts of my PostScript typeface collection don't want to play any more.

Do you have any favourite font managers/converters to recommend?

I've found a single converter on the App Store, but with only a single 5-star rating I'm a bit wary.

Thanks!

I recently found out - completely by accident - that a friend of mine opened a type foundry (sadly we have not been in touch much for a long time).

The first font she published there... is named after me. My goodness :blobcatmeltcry: Here's a link to the shop libraryofnarrativetypes.xyz/fo

Do check out her works at libraryofnarrativetypes.xyz/. Nórá is the most talented, thoughtful and hard working designer I'm honored to be friends with 🤍

For the past year or more, have been working on getting the “boring expansion” proposal into the ISO Open Font Format spec (OFF). It’s needed for Chinese, colour fonts (including emoji), layered fonts etc; it comes with a number of features more generally useful.

ISO OFF is likely to become a Draft International Standard shortly, for final ballot, and includes these changes.

Vendor support coming (harfbuzz already).

Hmm, what’s next?

for a long time there has been an ongoing misconception that Paul Rand's NeXT logo was constructed purely by hand without use of a typeface

i decided to reconstruct the logo with the assumption that Rand was a designer not a fontographer, and probably used off-the-shelf typefaces in all of his work

thanks to a 35 year old tip from user "will" on usenet group gnu.gnustep.discuss, who pointed out that the logo probably was constructed from Futura Light, i was able to reconstruct the logo to most of rand's specifications

this was a quick first-pass at replicating the logo, and it could most certainly be reworked to be 100% accurate.*

Rand did a few things to make it work:
- N and T were probably from Futura Standard Book
- e is probably from Futura Light
- X is the trickiest one. i spent so much time trying to figure out which font it might be, because Futura's X does not have angled tips. It turns out that the X is a plus sign, rotated 45 degrees! Again, Futura Light.

So yes - the entire logo is constructed from Futura - a 100 year old typeface, and a personal favourite of Rand's.

* for example, you'll notice that the stem on the T is too thick, due to my lazy use of character scaling in Affinity.

Poster/invitation for the exhibition “En quête de la géométrie des rêves” by architect Jean-Yves Barrier. Coralie Milière of Studio Silex used Immortel Infra in roman and italic styles. Started during a research project at @ANRT, the typeface by Clément Le Tulle-Neyret was released with 205TF in 2021. More:

Inter 4.1 from @rsms is out!

github.com/rsms/inter/releases

It includes a bunch of little fixes and improvements, but my favorite (and relevant to GNOME!) is that the automatic contextual alternate converting NxN to N×N has been disabled; this was pointed out while testing on GNOME, where it would feel weird seeing e.g. filenames or URLs where the letter “x” would unexpectedly look like the “×” multiplication symbol.
