Rachel Thorn 🍉🇺🇦🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈
Sometimes non-native speakers of English see certain phrases, such as "Imma be," being used by native speakers, and assume this is just modern English slang, available to anyone. But many of these usages are specifically #AAVE (African American Vernacular English), and if you are not #Black and you use these, you might be criticized for #CulturalAppropriation. The mistake is of course an innocent mistake, but that doesn't mean you aren't accountable at all. When you learn that a particular phrase (such as "Imma be") is AAVE and are called out, apologize, say you didn't know, and stop using it. Don't become defensive and try to argue that it's okay for you to use it because [reasons].

Flipboard Culture Desk
On a recent episode of "Dragon's Den," the Canadian equivalent of "Shark Tank," actor and investor Simu Liu called out a Quebec bubble tea brand for cultural appropriation. Now, he's asking fans to turn down the temperature. In a TikTok posted on Sunday, he reiterated his views, pointing out the difference between paying homage and being exploitative, but highlighted that the backlash had been too extreme. “On the flip side, I’ve been made aware that the business owners have received a lot of death threats and harassment and otherwise just kind of bullying and dogpiling, and I just want to say that, full stop, it’s never okay to make threats," he said. Sirana

Was macht man nun daraus?

#CulturalAppropriation #KulturelleAneigung #Rassismus
