The chirps, whistles of <a href="https://newsie.social/tags/dolphins" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dolphins</span></a>, rumblings of <a href="https://newsie.social/tags/elephants" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>elephants</span></a>, trills and tweets of <a href="https://newsie.social/tags/birdsong" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>birdsong</span></a> all have patterns and structure that convey information to other members of the animal’s species. Hope of a growing number of biologists, computer scientists is that applying AI to animal sounds might reveal what these creatures are saying to each other. <a href="https://www.nature.com/immersive/d41586-024-04050-5/index.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">nature.com/immersive/d41586-02</span><span class="invisible">4-04050-5/index.html</span></a></p>
Jon Sullivan<p>I spent yesterday at Woodside, John and Rosalie Wardle's NZ black beech forestry property in North Canterbury.</p><p>NZ forestry mostly uses fast growing selections of Nth American radiata pine, clear-felled &amp; replanted every ~30 years.</p><p>The Wardles do it differently, selectively harvesting from a natural black beech forest. It's sold for furniture and flooring, and the buyers want more than they can make.</p><p>Have a listen to the difference.</p><p><a href="https://www.nzffa.org.nz/farm-forestry-model/resource-centre/tree-grower-articles/february-2017/woodside-a-small-forest-managed-on-multiple-use-principles/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">nzffa.org.nz/farm-forestry-mod</span><span class="invisible">el/resource-centre/tree-grower-articles/february-2017/woodside-a-small-forest-managed-on-multiple-use-principles/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/forestry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>forestry</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/nz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nz</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/BirdSong" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BirdSong</span></a></p>
