First signs of growth in the winter sowing seeds I planted in early February. </p><p>Late this afternoon I found small green sprouts of Upland White Goldenrod<br>(Oligoneuron album) in one of the milk jugs. </p><p>cc <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mstdn.social/@MCDuncanLab" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>MCDuncanLab</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://c.im/@zardozWrex" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>zardozWrex</span></a></span> </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/WinterSowing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WinterSowing</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/NativePlants" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NativePlants</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Zone6b" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Zone6b</span></a></p>
Native Plants<p>Spent the morning sowing seeds for our Knob Hill Native Plant Gardens. I'm trying to grow Buttonbush from seed - if it sprouts, this shrub will go in our future <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/RainGarden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RainGarden</span></a>.</p><p>Rain gardens collect and filter stormwater, reduce flooding, and provide habitat and food to wildlife.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/WinterSowing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WinterSowing</span></a></p>
Native Plants<p>Here's how I prep a plastic bottle for winter sowing.</p><p>1. Add drainage holes.<br>2. Cut bottle in half.<br>3. Add moistened soil.<br>4. Add seeds.<br>5. Label.<br>6. Tap bottle shut.<br>7. Native Plants<p>5 tips for winter sowing:</p><p>1. Protect your pot from animals.<br>2. Don't bury seeds too deep. Either surface sow or put a very light layer of soil on top.<br>3. Ensure you have weather-proof labels that will stay in place. <br>4. Don't let seedlings dry out in the spring. Lift them up; they should not be too light.<br>5. Don't overseed. Clamshell was overseeded with coreopsis. Water jug was seeded well with nodding onion.</p><p>You got this!</p><p>Photos from May 2024. <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/WinterSowing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WinterSowing</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/NativePlants" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NativePlants</span></a></p>
Native Plants<p>I uploaded a short video to YouTube showing off my winter sowing results, if you want to take a look. Or see the photo below. Alt text lists species.</p><p>Winter sowing is an easy way to get lots of plants for cheap.
