Do you include in-jokes, hidden messages, or “Easter eggs” in your writing?</p></blockquote><p>Yes. If I can convince you to read <em>Mars Needed Women</em> (<a href="https://eldritch.cafe/@sfwrtr/114261812977623863" translate="no" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">eldritch.cafe/@sfwrtr/11426181</span><span class="invisible">2977623863</span></a>), there is a HUGE amount of subtext in the story. It's about hidden (or intentionally dusted with a tiny little bit camouflaging rust) messages. Much is also said indirectly. It's a study in saying a lot without saying much that would get you in trouble. The "EM" in the story is the in-joke, because, well, you <em>know</em> who that refers to. What happens to the silvery phallic symbols and the money is, well, maybe somewhat subversive? There's even a few Easter Eggs in the form of popular references. It was fun to write.</p><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sf</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sff</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sciencefiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sciencefiction</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSstory</span></a></p>

I learned to type on a manual typewriter. Completely unpowered, except by punching down keys. Make a mistake? Backspace. White out or type over white powder tape. Figure out where to line feed the carriage and space it forward, returning the carriage. CRLF anyone? Switch to a fresh sheet. Proofreader mark up. Yellow paper first draft. Retype. Blue paper second draft. Retype. White formatted perfectly to send to magazine or perspective agent. I still possess yellow and blue drafts! I did get a Smith Corona electric that let me swap cartridges between black and white out. I was really adept. Couldn't spell. Still can't, but spell check is heaven in comparison. </p><p>By the time I got the agent, I had an Epson matrix printer and an Apple ][ with a text editor and floppy drive to save drafts on. Had to beg the publisher to accept matrix printer paper. They HATED it.</p><p>Good times. </p><p>NOT!!!</p><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a></p>
Jack Yan (甄爵恩)<p>Not only did this not happen, looking at the map it’s a physical impossibility. Utter fiction from the <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/WCC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WCC</span></a>, and not the first time I have dealt with lying parking wardens. No part of Cambridge Terrace is even marked as a special vehicle lane for 50 m for a warden to make this call. Check it out yourself on a map or on Google Street View. I am going to call it: <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/racism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>racism</span></a>. Just say you don’t like a person of colour driving a new car. And yes, we get this weird stuff from time to time.</p>

Brian Jopek<p>From about this time in 2019; it was in the 2015 or 2016 time frame the folks at Warrior Canine Connection, an organization that links up veterans who qualify with service dogs, let me know one of their Golden Retriever pups was to be named “Jopek” for my son, Ryan. He ended up in the state of Washington with a couple and I haven’t heard from them in awhile but for a time, I would get photos and updates about “Joey,” seen here nosing into some blackberries. <br><a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/DogsOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DogsOfMastodon</span></a> <br><a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/WCC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WCC</span></a></p>
