Jupiter Rowland@<a href="https://mastodon.social/@benpate" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Ben Pate 🤘🏻</a> Not everyone will want to offer their music on Bandwagon for money. Some may want to give it away for free for various reasons (non-commercial license, German hobbyist artists not wanting to hassle with the German tax system and GEMA etc.), and Funkwhale may not be a viable option for them. At the same time, they may not want to or even be able to pay the same prices for anything beyond basic functionality as musicians or bands who intend to actually make money with their music.<br><br>Some features should remain free for music that's offered for free. For example, it shouldn't be lossless downloads that a musician or a band has to pay for as a feature, but charging money for lossless downloads. Having everyone pay for e.g. offering FLAC downloads favours commercial artists, and the anti-capitalist parts of the Fediverse <em>will</em> criticise you for that.<br><br>Alternatively, you could make the license choosable from a pull-down list per song or per album or for an entire account. And when a commercial license (or any license that isn't decidedly non-commercial) is selected, certain features are greyed-out or removed unless they're paid for. At the same time, when a non-commercial license is selected, the UI elements for charging money are greyed out or removed.<br><br>Also, if you ever plan to open-source and decentralise Bandwagon, you can't expect all instances to charge the same for the same. Even if you hard-code in what must be paid for, the moment Bandwagon is open-source, there will be at least one fork where certain or all payments are not hard-coded anymore. Not only will some musicians or bands prefer that fork for their own instances, but it's even likely that public instances of such a fork will be launched.<br><br>At that point, your pricing calculation will become moot.<br><br>#<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Long" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Long</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=LongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">LongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLong" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLong</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Bandwagon" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Bandwagon</a>
Jupiter Rowland@<a href="https://social.heise.de/@mho" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Martin Holland</a> Ditch Mastodon.<br><br>Move to Friendica.<br><br>Refollow everyone on Friendica whom you follow on Mastodon.<br><br>Integrate your Bluesky account directly into Friendica. Your Bluesky contacts will become Friendica contacts. No Bridgy Fed bridge needed.<br><br>Then you have one unified <del>timeline</del> stream with Friendica and Mastodon and the whole rest of the Fediverse and Bluesky. And diaspora*. And Tumblr (yes, right now already). And Libertree. Etc.<br><br>Better yet: You can send one and the same post to the Fediverse and to Bluesky and to diaspora* etc. all at once and receive comments from all these places under the same post.<br><br>Even better yet: A Friendica post can be as long as 400 Mastodon toots. And it can contain just about every kind of text formatting that's possible with HTML, up to and including a virtually unlimited number of images embedded in-line (instead of a maximum of four images always only dangling under the post as file attachments). And it can have a title.<br><br>Only two caveats: You'll probably need an account on a Friendica node in the USA to be able to federate with Threads. Even then you're at Meta's mercy because it's up to them whether that node is allowed to connect to Threads or not, and Friendica nodes are very likely to not be allowed to connect because Friendica's culture may collide with Threads' federation requirements.<br><br>Also, Friendica can't do polls.<br><br>#<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Long" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Long</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=LongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">LongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLong" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLong</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Fediverse" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Fediverse</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Mastodon" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mastodon</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Bluesky" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Bluesky</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Threads" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Threads</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=diaspora%2A" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">diaspora*</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Tumblr" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Tumblr</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Friendica" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Friendica</a>

It was an <a href="https://goto.77nn.it/tags/indiegogo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>indiegogo</span></a> campaign that really got me for bike weight (15kg battery included) and mostly free of maintenance (it has no gears and uses a belt instead of a chain).</p><p>The bike is really clever and has a sleek design. It is not designed to take on steep uphills, and probably a shock absorber would increase the comfort, but if you are no stranger to muscular bicycles you can enjoy riding it without any assistance at all in flat roads.</p><p>It happened that the handle mounted computer broke (mechanically, it actually works like a charm). So I contacted the support and asked for replacement (the model is out of production nowadays).</p><p>Before allowing me to purchase it, they demanded to see a proof of legitimate ownership. Of course I had kept my invoice, as I do for expensive things I buy.</p><p>A bit annoying, in the very first place, but later I realized that this made me feel somehow protected, and I really appreciated the message that if you steal it, you'll not be able to purchase any replacement, being it the computer, the battery or the front light.</p><p>They also thanked me to be their very first customer, as I purchased their first bike on Indiegogo.</p>
Jupiter Rowland@<a href="https://mitexleo.one/@ml" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mitex Leo</a> Short answer: no.<br><br>To my best knowledge, Hubzilla cannot import anything from Mastodon. No posts, no followed, especially no followers.<br><br>(streams) can import CSV-formatted follow lists; I don't know if Mastodon can export them, or if Mastodon has its own proprietary follow list format. But (streams) cannot make your followers on Mastodon your followers on (streams) because <em>it cannot make people follow you</em>. Also, (streams) cannot import posts from Mastodon.<br><br>Mass-importing 5,000+ connections from Mastodon to Hubzilla or (streams) would be a stupid idea anyway. You'd have to go through all of them and configure them. Yes, whereas Mastodon only has "I follow you" and "I don't follow you", Hubzilla and (streams) have extensive configuration options for connection. And you will need them.<br><br>You'd have to edit 5,000+ connections, one by one, and<br><ul><li>assign them the appropriate contact role (Hubzilla)/permission role ((streams)) so that they have the right permissions (on Hubzilla and (streams), everything is permissions, and permissions are everything)</li><li>add them to one or multiple privacy groups (Hubzilla)/access lists ((streams)) (think Mastodon lists, but on lots of coke and 'roids; optional on Hubzilla, but highly recommended)</li><li>maybe also adjust the (optional) affinity (Hubzilla)/friend zoom ((streams)) slider</li><li>maybe even add lines to the (optional, but recommended) per-contact filter lists (you'll need to do this on Hubzilla to keep contacts from spamming you with boosts)</li></ul><br>Neither Hubzilla nor (streams) is something that you can join and use away on 100% bone-stock default settings just like that.<br><br>And truth be told: If you give 5,000+ Fediverse actors full permissions to send you all their stuff, your unread activities counter (this exists, yes) will be up to "99+" every few minutes. I myself don't even have 100 active connections that are allowed to send me <em>anything</em>. On some of them, I filter boosts out. And yet, I get well over 100 unread activities per day that I have to catch up with.<br><br>In fact, Hubzilla and (streams) will suck even more content onto your stream than Mastodon. That's because they support threaded conversations. They don't show you single posts. They show you whole threads, including comments by people whom you don't follow and who didn't mention you.<br><br>I don't know if you follow Eugen Rochko. But if you do, imagine he posts something. 200 people reply. On Mastodon, you get Rochko's post. On Hubzilla and (streams), you get Rochko's post and 200 replies flooding onto your stream by and by.<br><br>Seriously, if you really want to move to Hubzilla (or (streams)), start over from scratch. And go slowly instead of following shit-tons of people right off the bat to have your stream abuzz like on Twitter or Facebook.<br><br>#<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Long" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Long</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=LongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">LongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLong" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLong</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Mastodon" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mastodon</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Hubzilla" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hubzilla</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Streams" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Streams</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=%28streams%29" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">(streams)</a>

Jupiter Rowland@<a href="https://io.waxandleather.com/@alisynthesis" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Alison Wilder</a> Because if you want full-blown user rights and all the same features as a local user on <em>all</em> over 30,000 Fediverse instances, you need a local user account on each one of them.<br><br>This means two things:<br><ul><li>If you come over to the Fediverse for the first time, and you register your first account on Mastodon, you automatically also register an account on 30,000+ more instances.</li><li>If you decide to host your own instance of whatever, and you spin it up for the first time, your instance immediately creates tens of millions of user accounts. One for everyone who has ever joined the Fediverse. Because anyone may decide to come over to your instance and use it, just like so.</li></ul><br>For one, this is utter overkill.<br><br>Besides, this is technologically impossible. This would require <em>all Fediverse instances</em> to know <em>all other Fediverse instances</em>. With no exceptions. Like, if I start up my own (streams) instance for the first time, and half a second later, someone on the other side of the globe starts up a Gancio instance, they would immediately have to know each other. And all the other instances in the Fediverse.<br><br>And, of course, it would require a newly-launched instance to know <em>all Fediverse users</em>. Again, with no exception.<br><br>How and from which source are they supposed to know?<br><br>That said, there is a single sign-on system for the Fediverse. It's called <a href="https://magicsignon.org/page/openwebauth/home" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">OpenWebAuth</a>. It was created by @<a class="" href="https://fediversity.site/channel/mikedev" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mike Macgirvin 🖥️</a> (creator of Friendica and all its descendants) in the late 2010s already for now-defunct <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki/The_Zotlabs_projects#Zap" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zap</a>, a fork (of a fork?) of <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki/Hubzilla" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hubzilla</a> which, in turn, is a fork of the currently hyped Facebook alternative <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki/Friendica" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Friendica</a>. It was backported to Hubzilla in 2020. Everything that came after Zap, including the still existing <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki/(streams)" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">streams repository</a>, got it, too.<br><br>However, first of all, OpenWebAuth is only fully implemented on Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte. Plus, it has client-side support on Friendica. This means that Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte recognise logins on all four, but Friendica doesn't recognise logins from anywhere.<br><br>As for Mastodon, OpenWebAuth implementation was actually developed to the point of an official merge request in Mastodon's GitHub repository. As far as I know, it was rejected. Mastodon won't implement OpenWebAuth, full stop.<br><br>Besides, it doesn't give you all the same power as a local user. You can't log into Friendica, go to a Hubzilla hub and create a wiki or a webpage or a CalDAV calendar, just like so.<br><br>OpenWebAuth is only for guest permissions. Because on Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte, permissions are everything.<br><br>For example, let's assume you have an account and a channel on (streams). Let's also assume that your (streams) channel and this Hubzilla channel of mine here are connected. Furthermore, let's assume that I've decided to only allow my own full connections to see my profile.<br><br>If you're logged out, and you go to my profile page, you see nothing.<br><br>But then you log in. And you come back to my profile page (provided your browser is configured so that the Hubzilla hub that I call home is allowed to create cookies). My home hub recognises your login on (streams). It identifies you as you, as one of my contacts. Thus, it identifies you as someone who is permitted to see my profile.<br><br>And all of a sudden, you see my profile.<br><br>That, for example, is what OpenWebAuth is for.<br><br>#<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Long" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Long</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=LongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">LongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLong" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLong</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Fediverse" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Fediverse</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Friendica" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Friendica</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Hubzilla" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hubzilla</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Zap" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zap</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Streams" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Streams</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=%28streams%29" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">(streams)</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Forte" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Forte</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=SingleSignOn" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">SingleSignOn</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=OpenWebAuth" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">OpenWebAuth</a>

For example, if you aren't allowed to repeat (= boost) or share (= quote-post) a post or a comment, <em>you don't even have the button</em>. These permissions aren't understood anywhere outside these three yet, but I've got higher hopes that this permissions system will be cast into FEPs than that Mastodon's hacks will be.<br><br>In fact, Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte have reply control on three levels:<br><ul><li>channel-wide (who is generally allowed to reply; Hubzilla has eight levels, (streams) and Forte have three)</li><li>for individual connections</li><li>per post (on Hubzilla, commenting on a post can be disallowed altogether; on (streams) and Forte, additionally, commenting can be limited to your full connections, and a time can be defined from which commenting will no longer be allowed)</li></ul><br>Again, within these three, if commenting is not allowed, the UI elements for commenting will be missing. Outsiders may be able to comment, but all three block disallowed comments on a server level, i.e. they aren't deleted from the inbox, they are kept from entering the inbox in the first place. And so they don't appear in the thread for all those who support threaded conversations.<br><br>It'd really be nice if this permissions system became one or a set of FEPs for others to pick up.<br><br>CC: @<a href="https://climatejustice.social/@PaulaToThePeople" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">PaulaToThePeople</a><br><br>#<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Long" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Long</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=LongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">LongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLong" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLong</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Fediverse" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Fediverse</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Hubzilla" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hubzilla</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Streams" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Streams</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=%28streams%29" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">(streams)</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Forte" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Forte</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=ReplyControls" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">ReplyControls</a>

Not unlisted. Private. Most fediverse software will honour this today; and it doesn't require yet another "pretend permission". Like unlisted. <br><br>And Mike should know. He brought things to the Fediverse like actually working permissions. Including permissions on two levels to quote-post any content on a channel. Readily available right now at least on Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte.<br><br>Also, <em>this</em> is what people on Friendica and its descendants have been using quote-posts for since 2010.<br><br><blockquote>You will be notified when someone quotes you.</blockquote><br>You already are when someone on Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) or Forte quote-posts one of your posts.<br><br>As for Pleroma, Misskey and their forks, you aren't notified right now, and I've got my doubts that you will be after this change.<br><br>Also, "quote" and "quote-post" are two different things. Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte can do both. "Quote" is what I'm doing right here. Whether or not you're notified depends on whether or not you're mentioned.<br><br>And blocking quotes is even less possible. A quote only consists of a pair of BBcode tags plus the quoted text in-between. And on Friendica and all its descendants, you don't work with a WYSIWYG editor by default, but you have to get your hands dirty on raw markup code.<br><br><blockquote>You will be able to withdraw your post from the quoted context at any time.</blockquote><br>Again, probably not if someone on Pleroma, Misskey or one of their forks quote-posts you.<br><br>And <em>definitely</em> not if someone on Friendica or one of its descendants quote-posts you.<br><br>The difference is that a quote-post on Pleroma, Misskey or one of their forks is actually a reference to the original. Jupiter Rowland@<a href="https://mastodon.green/@edintone" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Graham Ward</a> This has a variety of reasons.<br><br>One, Friendica hasn't been big or well-known to begin with. Honestly, did you even know it exists prior to mid-January?<br><br>Two, if you go by registered accounts rather than active accounts, Friendica is small because it is an old Friendica tradition to purge accounts that haven't been in use for a while. So while you may have millions of Mastodon accounts from late 2022 that are now unused, there are barely any unused Friendica accounts.<br><br>Three, not as many people leave Facebook as Instagram. Instagram is social <em>media</em>, it's all about having followers and posting media. It doesn't matter much <em>who</em> follows you. Facebook is a social <em>network</em>. It's all about being in contact with those whom you already know anyway. If they aren't in the Fediverse/on Friendica, their real-life friends don't move to Friendica either.<br><br>Four, a significant number of Facebook refugees is railroaded over to Mastodon, often without even being told that the Fediverse is more than Mastodon. The railroading is done either by those who still think the Fediverse is only Mastodon themselves or by fundamentalist Mastodon fans who want everyone to be on Mastodon.<br><br>Five, of those who are both on Mastodon and Facebook, many who try Friendica expect either an all-out Facebook clone, just like they expected Mastodon to be an all-out Twitter clone, or they expect Mastodon with more characters and groups. But they find Friendica to be neither and instead something new and "quirky" to get used to yet again. Once they learn that you can follow Friendica accounts from Mastodon, they stop their Friendica experiment again.<br><br>Six and finally, there's no app for Friendica in the Apple App Store. Simple as that. Friendica on the iPhone means either a Mastodon app and a very very limited subset of Friendica's features or the Web interface. But many iPhone users won't touch a Web browser with a 10-foot barge pole.<br><br>The alternatives don't matter much. They are mainly Friendica's own descendants, <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki/Hubzilla" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hubzilla</a> (a hyper-massive feature monster with the Eiger North Face of learning curves and not even a functional Android app, not to mention that only few people have even heard of it) and <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki/(streams)" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">(streams)</a> (easier to get into than Hubzilla, but still even harder than Friendica, extremely obscure to the point of being practically unknown outside of itself and Hubzilla, with only two open-registration instances that are impossible to find and with no support for native mobile apps whatsoever). Neither of them really cuts into the numbers of people who move from Facebook to Friendica.<br><br>And Matrix is not an alternative to Facebook. It's an alternative to WhatsApp, Telegram and Discord. It's instant messaging.<br><br>#<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Long" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Long</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=LongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">LongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLong" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLong</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Facebook" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Facebook</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FacebookAlternative" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FacebookAlternative</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Friendica" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Friendica</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Hubzilla" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hubzilla</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Streams" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Streams</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=%28streams%29" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">(streams)</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Matrix" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Matrix</a>
Jupiter Rowland@<a href="https://mastodon.social/@jameswynn" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">James Wynn 🧐</a> I've been mainly using Hubzilla for years now. But it's a monster. I'd say that of all Fediverse software applications, it has the steepest learning curve.<br><br>It shows the most clearly that its UI hasn't changed much since 2012. This UI has to harness an extreme wealth of features, some of which had their UI elements glued on seemingly randomly here and there when they were introduced. Parts of Hubzilla's philosophy are geared to a Zot-centred Fediverse that was anticipated in 2012 to come to pass in the mid-2010s rather than today's ActivityPub-centred Fediverse. And besides, you have to spend a considerable amount of time setting up and configuring your Hubzilla channel before connecting to anyone and posting anything, all without any official walk-through being available.<br><br>Still, it's my main daily driver, also because I need some of its exclusive features.<br><br>I've also got two (streams) channels. It's easier to get into, also because its handling has been optimised for a) today's Fediverse and b) what its users actually need in practice. It lacks a lot of features that Hubzilla has, particularly any kind of connection or federation beyond Nomad and ActivityPub. But it feels more modern, and while (streams) isn't "register, log in, post away"-level easy, it doesn't feel as awkward to handle as Hubzilla.<br><br>I'd say that the <em>actual</em> main disadvantage of (streams) in comparison with Hubzilla is that public, open-registration instances are not only few and far between (I know one in North America and one in Europe), but almost impossible to find unless you ask someone who knows them.<br><br>In case you're interested, I've made <a href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/item/0a75de76-eb27-4149-b708-f20b2f79d392" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">a number of tables</a> that compare Mastodon, Friendica, Hubzilla and (streams) with one another.<br><br>By the way: Only Hubzilla supports calendar sharing. Extra caveats: It doesn't work with the public event calendar of a channel, only with CalDAV calendars which are not public. Also, AFAIK, you can only see (and then edit) another channel's calendar in the calendar view of your own channel if that other channel has given you full admin permissions.<br><br>#<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Long" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Long</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=LongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">LongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLong" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLong</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Friendica" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Friendica</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Hubzilla" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hubzilla</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Streams" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Streams</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=%28streams%29" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">(streams)</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Calendar" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Calendar</a>

Two of them still exist.<br><br>One is intentionally nameless, intentionally brandless, intentionally not a project and intentionally released into the public domain. Since the community needed to address to it by <em>something</em>, they took the name of the code repository (which <em>needed</em> a name), put parentheses around it and called it <a href="https://codeberg.org/streams/streams" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">(streams)</a>.<br><br>It's a fork (2021)<br>of a fork (Roadhouse; 2021)<br>of three forks (Osada, Mistpark 2020 a.k.a. Misty, Redmatrix 2020; 2020)<br>of a fork (Zap; 2018)<br>of maybe another fork (Osada; non-nomadic; 2018; if Zap was forked from Osada rather than directly from Hubzilla;)<br>of Hubzilla.<br><br>(streams) is reduced in features and connectivity in comparison with Hubzilla, but so were the first Osada and Zap. However, in terms of permission control and nomadicity, it's at least up-to-par with Hubzilla. In fact, it isn't quite as difficult to use as Hubzilla because permission handling has been adapted what the Fediverse of the 2020s actually requires as opposed to what a hypothetical Fediverse of the mid-2010s centred around the Red Matrix would require.<br><br>I've made a series of tables that compare Mastodon, Friendica, Hubzilla and (streams). You can find them <a href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/item/0a75de76-eb27-4149-b708-f20b2f79d392" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">here</a>.<br><br>The other still existing fork is <a href="https://codeberg.org/fortified/forte" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Forte</a> from August, 2024. Forte is a direct fork of (streams). It's highly experimental because all support for the Nomad protocol was removed, and it has to rely on ActivityPub for nomadic identity. Thus, it is not officially released yet, it does not have public instances, and it is not recommended as a stable, reliable daily driver yet.<br><br>#<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Long" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Long</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=LongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">LongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLong" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLong</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Fediverse" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Fediverse</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Mastodon" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mastodon</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Friendica" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Friendica</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Hubzilla" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hubzilla</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Streams" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Streams</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=%28streams%29" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">(streams)</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Forte" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Forte</a>

Jupiter Rowland@<a href="https://mastodon.social/@eleanoreduncan" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Eleanore Duncan</a> That's kind of difficult, actually.<br><br>Technically speaking, there is Friendica which was created in 2010 as a Facebook alternative (better than Facebook rather than an outright Facebook clone), and there are Hubzilla and (streams), both descendants of Friendica created by Friendica's creator. They're quite powerful, (streams) more than Friendica and Hubzilla even more than (streams), and they've got everything you need for social networking.<br><br>I've made a series of tables that compare these three with one another and with Mastodon. <a href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/item/0a75de76-eb27-4149-b708-f20b2f79d392" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">You can find them here.</a><br><br>But if you say, "app," I suppose you mean, "dedicated native mobile phone app." This is the first hindrance. Native specialised phone apps are only available for Friendica and then only for Android and Sailfish OS. The only iOS Friendica app is a closed beta; it exists, but you have to join its beta test program instead of being able to load it from the App Store easy-peasy.<br><br>Technically, you can use Friendica with some apps made for Mastodon. But you'll only have those features that Mastodon has, too. You won't see threaded conversations. You won't have text formatting. You won't have groups. You won't be able to post pictures. You won't have any access to any configuration. And so forth. You'll only have the absolute, bare-bone basics.<br><br>Otherwise, and for Hubzilla and (streams) generally, there's no way around the Web interface (browser, PWA).<br><br>As for community building, Friendica, Hubzilla and (streams) not only support groups, but they have groups/forums, optionally even private ones. Organisational presentation is possible, too. All three have blogging-level support of text formatting in their posts all the way to embedding an unlimited number of images right in the middle of a post. So a group could make an introduction post with headlines and bullet-point lists and tables and pictures and all the shebang and pin it at the top for all (permitted) visitors to see. Hubzilla even supports simple webpages which could be used for presentation. <a href="https://hubzilla.org" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hubzilla's own website is a webpage on a Hubzilla channel.</a><br><br>"Easy and clear," that's the issue here. Friendica has quite a bit of a learning curve. (streams) has an even steeper learning curve. Hubzilla has the steepest learning curve of all three. None of them has the UI/UX of something created by a Silicon Valley start-up from $50,000,000 of venture capital.<br><br>Ironically, Hubzilla is the one with the best user documentation. But what I mean is not the user documentation built into the hubs, but <a href="https://help.hubzilla.hu/en/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">its complete re-write by a user</a> that's intended to be built into Hubzilla itself one day and replace the old documentation. If you want to peruse it, you'll have to be told by an experience Hubzilla user that it exists, and where you can find it. Still, Hubzilla is highly complex with quite a bit of pitfalls and the worst UX of the three.<br><br><a href="https://wiki.friendi.ca/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Friendica has a wiki</a>, but it mostly covers how-tos for certain things instead of being a full-blown user manual.<br><br>(streams)' built-in help system is gradually being rebuilt from zero, but in the style of a technical specification again. And it's very incomplete.<br><br>Still, you will need some kind of documentation to get started with all three, ideally plus how-tos for Facebook refugees on how to get started and then do Facebook things. You can't use on either of the three what you've learned from Facebook. They do have everything you need as a Facebook refugee, but it looks different, it feels different, <em>it works differently</em>.<br><br>For example, if you're on either of the three, and you're looking for the place where you can create a new group/forum, you can look forever in vain. Unlike on Facebook, groups/forums are not an additional feature of their own. They're accounts (Friendica)/channels (Hubzilla, (streams)) like your user account/channel, but with special settings. This alone makes many Facebook users scream out that this feature is completely unuseable, simply because it isn't what they expect it to be.<br><br>In addition, if you run a Friendica group on the same node as your personal account, you have to log out and back in again to administer or moderate the group and to get gack to your account. But nobody tells you to have your group on another node than your personal account.<br><br>On Hubzilla and (streams), it's the opposite: It's better to not only have a group or forum on the same instance as your personal channel, but <em>on the same account</em>. You can have multiple channels, multiple fully separate identities on the same account because your identity is fully detached from your account. If you have your personal channel and your forum channel on the same account, you can jump back and forth between the two. But this is something that practically doesn't exist outside of Hubzilla and (streams), and so, nobody will tell you about this feature.<br><br>Even if you can wrap your mind around all this, you still aren't over the hump. Especially not on Hubzilla and (streams). On Hubzilla, you can have a restricted or private group/forum. But you have to dive into the permission settings of your forum channel, a place where you're being warned that you have to act carefully, and set the corresponding permissions accordingly by hand. On (streams), there's less to configure and no warning; instead, there are not one, but <em>four</em> types of forums. But neither the Web interface nor the documentation tells you what's what, and what does what.<br><br>Another idea, but much less like Facebook, would be <a href="https://joinmbin.org/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mbin</a>. Technically, Mbin is an alternative to Reddit and Hacker News and kind of feels like Reddit, UI-wise. But it also offers personal microblogging instead of being limited to only group discussions, and it's much more compatible with the rest of the Fediverse.<br><br>There are two caveats again. One, most Mbin users are former Redditors. This means that Mbin's culture = Reddit's culture, including, but not limited to dank maymays, shitposts all over the place and potentially also power-tripping mods (if you want to join existing Mbin magazines (= subreddits) rather than starting new ones). However, I guess that Mbin, on average, is not as hostile and xenophobic towards the rest of the Fediverse as large parts of Lemmy are.<br><br>Two, again, there's no iPhone app that works with Mbin. For Android, there's Interstellar. For iOS, there's only the Web interface.<br><br>CC: @<a href="https://climatejustice.social/@PaulaToThePeople" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">PaulaToThePeople</a><br><br>#<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Long" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Long</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=LongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">LongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLong" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLong</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Fediverse" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Fediverse</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Facebook" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Facebook</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FacebookAlternative" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FacebookAlternative</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FacebookGroups" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FacebookGroups</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Friendica" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Friendica</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Hubzilla" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hubzilla</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Streams" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Streams</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=%28streams%29" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">(streams)</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Threadiverse" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Threadiverse</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Mbin" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mbin</a>
