It's gentle, and deliberately repetitive. Extra points for the Ingmar Bergman tarot cards. For fans of Éric Rohmer and Hong Sang-soo.

The Amateur – Enagaging enough thriller about a CIA expert (Rami Malek) whose wife (Rachel Brosnahan) is killed by terrorists. He blackmails his bosses to let him hunt down and kill his wife's assailants. It’s too long, fairly ludicrous, but it'll pass a couple of hours.

September Says – Ariane Labed's dIsappointingly flat adaptation of Daisy Johnson’s novel, Sisters. I was hoping for a lot more from this.

Holy Cow – Enjoyable debut from Louise Courvoisier, centred on a teen whose fatehr dies leaving him to look after his little sister. He decides to take on the fmaily cheese-making dynasty to try to win a €30,000 prize for making the best Comté. It's a bit like Ken Loach’s lighter work. Enjoyable.

#Films #Movies

Ishmael Lasting
A Powell & Pressburger sandwich for #LetterboxdFriday

A CANTERBURY TALE - P&P really had a quite astonishing run of films in the 1940s. Watching any one of them makes me marvel at how much they achieved together during that period

A GENERATION - First of Wajda's War Trilogy. Young people join the Polish underground resistance.

THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN - Visually, it's constantly extraordinary, but I've never taken to it in quite the same way I took to Delicatessen (which I love).

Where Delicatessen feels rhythmic and controlled, this feels big and overly busy. For all its flair, I find it a bit wearing

GONE TO EARTH - God alone knows what accent Jennifer Jones is attempting here, but the film has such a pleasing Technicolor artificiality to it that makes the dodgy Shropshire voices hardly matter. A simple romance elevated to mythic status through sheer force of style

#LastFourWatched

Bradley Bravard
Smoke (1995) - 4/5, definitely feels like a Paul Auster story, reminded me a little of his novel The Brooklyn Follies

Don Q (2024) - 2/5, Armand Assante and Saundra Santiago deserved a better movie

To Live and Die in L.A. (1985) - 4/5, probably deserves more than 4 stars but too dark for me at this moment in history

The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) - 5/5, still one of my favorite action films

#LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched #letterboxd #movies #cinema

It’s a bit flat, and the ending is silly, but with Edith Head costumes, including some crazy Christmas jumpers, and Stanwyck pretending to play the piano (at one point the keys don’t even move!), this was worth watching.

Mississippi Mermaid – Odd Truffaut film that was panned when it was released, starring Catherine Deneueve as JP Belmondo’s mail-order bride. Yeah. It’s a strange film, at times gritty, at others melodramatic, involving fraud, a long con, and runs out of steam after the first half, but if you want to see Deneuve with David Sylvian Gentlemen Take Polaroids makeup, and a great bit where she flashes her tits at a car driver, making him crash, then it’s definitely worth your time.

The Contender – This US political drama had Oscar noms when it came out in 2000, and Joan Allen and Gary Oldman are excellent, but a movie about the US president and vice-president having morals, being upstanding, and wanting to do the right thing now seems as sci-fi as 2001.

Nickel Boys – Finally got round to seeing this, but over three nights, unfortunately. It’s excellent, and I need to see it in one go in the cinema rather than on TV. The most individual of the Best Film Oscar noms from this year

#Films #Movies

Ishmael Lasting
#LetterboxdFriday

EASY A - Solidly enjoyable American high school comedy adaptation of The Scarlet Letter. But Clueless remains the benchmark for this subgenre

DR WHO & THE DALEKS - There is a parallel universe out there somewhere in which Peter Cushing played the actual, real Doctor. And Christopher Lee was The Master

EVENING BREEZES - Made in 1980, but in a new wave style of circa 1965. A gay girl is madly in love with her straight friend. Captures the feeling of unrequited love really well, with lots of wandering the streets, lying on the floor and looking up whimsically at buildings. Bleak though, which - let's face it - most crushes are not

POLITE SOCIETY - On the one hand you could argue it wears its Edgar Wright influences too much on its sleeve. On the other hand, why wouldn't British comedy action films in the 2020s be influenced by Edgar Wright? Also assisted by a charming central performance from Priya Kansara. We should see her more. Good fun

#LastFourWatched
