k8quinn 🇺🇦 🇨🇦 🇲🇽 🇪🇺<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mstdn.social/@HopelessDemigod" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>HopelessDemigod</span></a></span> </p><p>I heard the news on TV and read the newspapers when it happened.</p><p>Pictures I took myself of the ruined lifeboat (found empty) on display at the Valley Camp Museum in Sault Ste Marie, the actual ship's bell from the Fitzgerald at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in Whitefish Point.</p><p>The Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle here in Detroit has preserved the wheelhouse of the William Clay Ford which (with the Arthur Anderson) was sent out to look for the Fitzgerald while it was still storming. Feels a bit weird to stand in it and think about that night.</p><p>I've also attended a memorial service for the Fitz at Old Mariners Church in Detroit and read a couple of books on the subject. Most of the 2025 Great Lakes have been well below average both before and after mid-February. As a result, the St. Lawrence seaway is opening early.
