Not to worry, however – there was so much fantastic music this year that I’ve doubled this list to include twenty favorites as well. There are more people releasing more music than ever before, and I could feel despair over the fact that I’ll never have the time to hear all the incredible music that I might love. But I think it’s a good problem to have. I’m exposed to so much magic so frequently that I have to share the best of it just to keep track. That’s why I’m here, and why I’m always posting on twitter and now bluesky too. Algorithms have been nice for finding stuff that’s similar to what you already like, but lately they seem as broken as everything else that seemed so futuristically convenient a decade ago. All these services we’ve begun to rely on have eroded, often in line with mass layoffs at the companies that provide them. The human element is leaking entirely out of the corporate music infrastructure. So I think it’s more important than ever that regular people who are tuned in spread the word about the best new (and old) music they encounter.So, here I am with the annual big album list. I couldn’t settle on just fifty again, or even sixty, so I’m dropping eighty great albums made in 2024 that I think you should really hear. Twenty of them are singled out at the end as the best of the best – especially masterful, poignant, mindbending pieces of music that touched me deeper than anything else I heard this year. 1001 Other AlbumsFediverse AOTY ListHey, so we’re compiling a Fediverse-wide, community-sourced Albums-of-The-Year (AOTY) list, of the albums – from any year – that rocked our worlds in 2024!For those who follow my personal Mastodon account, you may have seen some tooting about this on the weekend, and people seem to have liked the idea – we already have about 65 albums from 25ish people! So I’m going to leave the call open until the end of the year for any Fedizens who still want to add albums they think others will dig. Then, around New Years, I’ll do up a blog post here with the final list, complete with links to find the albums. You in?The Rules: <ul><li>Anyone with an account in the Fediverse (e.g., Mastodon) can submit their picks. I’ll include each submitter’s username in the final list, leaving off the instance unless asked to keep it in (e.g., mine will be tagged just “buffyleigh”).</li><li>Reply here or to <a href="https://mas.to/@buffyleigh/113652474704318736" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">my original post</a> with your top album(s) of the year, to a maximum of 3 per person. Slowly but steadily approaching with a sadistic rictus grin on its skull-like visage as each of its shambling steps reveberates like huge brass kettle drums of unrelenting, inescapable doom, to embrace and engulf me, flesh and bone and heart and soul 😓......well.
