Angela
I've been playing 7 Days to Die again, solo. I find it soothing somehow. I know what to do to be successful. And if I mess up anyway (despite knowing what I should be doing), I've got the difficulty set so that my character dying is not as much of a punishment as it would normally be.

I think I'm nearly to Day 63 now. I've got my level 6 machine gun, level 6 armor, and some nice steel tools. I haven't put many points into looting/scavenging, so I don't have an impact driver yet, but everything else is okay.

I'm still using a motorcycle even though I can build a 4x4. I like driving overland a lot and I think the motorcycle is better for that. Though I'm at a tier now where I get too much loot - I cannot carry it all. A 4x4 would help there. Maybe I'll make one soon.

I find it interesting how different aspects of this type of game appeal to different people.

My friend is a "base builder." In every survival crafting game she plays, she has to be in charge of laying out the base and constructing it. She carefully chooses the location, measures a lot, "argues" with the game mechanics to get it to do what she wants, and eventually builds a pretty nice base. She's okay in a fight but that's not her main draw for these games.

Her husband likes to fetch materials for her. He loves mining a ton of iron or coal or nitrates or even stone. He figures out what she needs and he goes after it. He's okay in a fight, but he's there to give things to his wife to make her building easier.

Another person they game with is a shooter. His preferred game is a shooting game, or some kind of combat. In addition to first-person shooters, he plays a lot of League of Legends.

He plays 7 because they play it and he wants to game with them. He's definitely there to go on jobs and eliminate zombies. He'll also go collect materials, but that's secondary. He comes back with lots of stuff, but he GOT that stuff because he was hunting down zombies.

I am not a base-builder. I will build them, because you pretty much have to, but I don't have a grand plan and I don't need it to really be that pretty.

M storage base in 7 is so utilitarian. It does not have a roof, because it does not matter in this game if my character gets rained on. I just need room for my crafting stations, water collectors, cooking, and storage.

My horde night base is a design I learned from another friend - I am pretty sure he saw it somewhere online and then he improved it. I do a simple version, which is build a tower, build a narrow "balance beam" to the front of the tower, and build a set of stairs at the other end of that balance beam so the zombies can walk up and march across the beam to me.

It's pretty smooth. It doesn't seem to take much damage, and I am safe inside my tower with some grills in the opening and roof (I do the roof so I can also get the vultures who try to claw their way in from above).

So I'm not really a base builder. I just do what is necessary.

I'm not really a shooter either. I take out the zombies, but that's because you have to. If you don't, you're toast. And usually you're getting paid to clear someplace out so that it's safe again. So I do it, but again, just what's necessary.

What I like it collecting things so that I can make things that I need. I like collecting lead, iron, and brass so I can manufacture ammunition. I like finding springs and pipes and stuff so I can build weapons. I like boiling glue and combining it with cloth so I can make duct tape, which is useful for everything.

I even like planting seeds and harvesting them so I can make the good nutritious food that will keep my character going for longer.

I also like upkeep. In 7, you need to regularly repair your bases, because zombies will chew on them. I like going out the morning after Horde Night, checking the structure for damage and fixing it back up.

(I find this funny because in real life, I do not enjoy chores like cooking, washing dishes, or mowing the yard. But I will do chores in a game. No problem)

This is what I like in Raft also. I have to play the story after a certain point, because I want the things that you can only get when you visit the storyline locations. But I'm not really there for the story. Mostly I like collecting stuff so I can make the things my character needs. Good food, protective clothing, tools for harvesting stuff.

I think this is why I enjoy Planet Crafter. It's all about collecting things so you can generate stuff to make your character's life easier (and achieve the goal of terraforming the planet even faster).

You would think, given all of this, that I would be in love with Subnautica. I wanted so much to love that game. It's just too creepy for me.

I know, I know. A game where zombies are jumping out at me all the time isn't "too creepy" but a "swim in a beautiful alien ocean" game is? I maintain it has something to do with the sound. I think they are using that tone that gives people the creeps (like they do in Phasmophobia). I think if I could turn that off, I'd be a lot happier. Or maybe I should try Subzero, which has more above-ground action.

In thinking about this, my other gamer friend (the one I'm playing the new Planet Crafter DLC with) is definitely a base-builder and that suits me fine. I can go exploring and bring home cool stuff, and I don't have to worry about constructing a base.

He's also very into figuring out how to make things happen faster, which is not my thing. So he's sending up rockets and converting drills to the next higher design as soon as it unlocks. Meanwhile I'm happily sorting my finds into their proper containers, marking points of interest on the map (Superalloy, Uranium, Obsidian), and harvesting our crops.

Anyway. Different strokes for different folks. And if you can get a crew where everyone enjoys something different, it can work really well.

tl;dr I enjoy video games in probably the most boring way possible. My thanks to the programmers who make games that work this way.

#Subnautica #PlanetCrafter #Raft #7DaysToDie

Angela
I had been hunting and hunting for the Wasteland Treasures book that improves your chances of finding acid bottles in 7 Days to Die, and do you know where I finally got it? A flatbed trailer that occasionally respawns zombies. It's right across the street from my base.

I walked too close, triggered them to wake up, and had to dispatch them. I got a loot bag that had the coveted book in it.

That said, I have yet to get a single bottle of acid to drop in any loot from a vehicle, so I don't know how much "reading" that book increased my chances. Not enough, clearly.

Best place in Pre-Gen 6K to get bottles of acid? Buses. I've had it drop from looting buses multiple times (not even dismantling them, just searching them). #7DtD #7DaystoDie #Gaming

Angela
I've been playing a LOT of 7 Days to Die lately. It is where I go when I want to escape reality, and I'm wanting that a lot just lately.

I'm flying solo this time, and things are going okay. I have some of the settings backed off so it's not quite as lethal, and it's about right for me.

I'm into somewhere in the 90s as far as "days passed" in gametime, I think. Maybe I'm into the low 100s. I have a nice garden, plenty of dew collectors, forges, workbenches, chemistry stations, and I've got one of each kind of vehicle built (even a gyrocopter!).

I finished the bridge I was rage-building (there is a REALLY LONG and REALLY WIDE and REALLY TWISTY river that kept getting in my way and there were no bridges - you had to go all the way north of its source or all the way south where it has a natural dam), and then I realized that the way I built it didn't jive with the way the blocks want to sit. The bridge is fine, but the low angled set of blocks I needed to use were not lining up with the bridge. Arg.

So I had to re-excavate a BUNCH of the bank to build a low-incline ramp at a diagonal so I can easily drive down and across the bridge, and then get back up when I come back.

There is still work to be done (like safety rails) but it's useable and I'm a lot happier. I can get to the other town a lot faster now.

One thing is really starting to get to me though - there are certain items that you need to collect in order to craft certain things. These are foundational items; you cannot craft these, you must find them.

My world is for some reason REALLY short on acid. You don't need it a lot, but when you do need it, you need it really badly.

There is a "book" in the game that if you find it and read it, you up your chances of finding acid. I CANNOT FIND THAT BOOK!

It's in the Wasteland Treasures series, and I keep finding copies of other books in that series, but NOT the one about the acid. I'm going spare looking for this thing. And also getting really obsessed with finding acid itself.

I'm checking all the Crack A Books, I'm taking apart all the sinks (because that's supposed to be a good chance of finding acid), I'm checking all the traders for the book or just for acid I can buy. No luck.

If anyone else has played this game and has any hints about how to find that Wasteland Treasures book, I'm desperate to know. I'm playing the Pre-Gen 6K world. #7DaysToDie #Gaming

Angela
If anyone has been thinking about buying the game 7 Days to Die on Steam, this is the time. It's on sale April 22nd, 2024 - April 29th, 2024. They are getting ready to move out of Early Access, so this is a chance to get it at a discount (the future price will be a lot higher).

It's a game you can play solo or with a group. It's a crafting/survival game, but it's also a shooter because there are zombies who want to eat you and they do not take a polite refusal.

I like it. Maybe you would like it.

#7DaysToDie #7DtD #Gaming

Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮
Over 10 years later 7 Days to Die is going to leave Early Access https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2024/04/over-10-years-later-7-days-to-die-is-going-to-leave-early-access/

#7DaystoDie #Linux #PCGaming

Angela
I finished building my danged bridge in my 7 Days to Die game.

Okay, "finished" is too strong a word. I got it all the way across the river. I did not drown and it did not collapse.

Now I need to add more supports. The physics in this game are really hard for me to figure out. I know how many blocks I can build straight out from a support column before the structure fails, but I don't know how it works when you have a "floor" with periodic supports. Which of the "floor" blocks go to which support column? I lose track because the blocks blend together.

Anyway. I will add more columns from the bed of the river up to the bridge, just to make sure it does not fall apart when I attempt to drive over it.

And I need to probably add some guard rails or something, because I tend to drive too fast in this game and that can have unanticipated results as well.

But not anytime soon, because it took me so long that it's nearly Horde Night, so I have to go do that.

#7DtD #7DaysToDie #Gaming

Angela
I started a new world in "7 Days to Die." I wanted to find out how successful I could be on my own. Though my confidence was not high, because I lowered a couple of the difficulty settings (fewer zombies on Horde Night, Scavenger Mode instead of regular mode so it's not as aggressive).

I'm doing okay, but I did a pre-gen map, which I had not done before. This map has a ridiculously placed river that has (as far as I can tell) zero bridges. You either have to go WAY up north to the source of the river (and drive over the "top" of that), or you have to go way down south where there is a dam or something that you can drive over.

It's constantly getting in my way, so I have begun trying to construct a bridge. It's going about as well as you would expect, considering I do NOT play these games for the love of building stuff.

I think I'm about 1/3 of the way across the river, and I'm not sure I'm putting enough support under it so I may go back to the part I've already done and add more of those. It's tedious because swimming in this game doesn't really work that well, but I've kind of worked out a system now.

I also need to manually dig out the side of a hill so I will be able to drive down to the bridge, which was something I did not think out that well. I just kept wanting that bridge in the same spot, so that's where I am building it, regardless of whether it's a "good" place for it.

Anyway, this project will keep me busy for a while. I think I will be be okay through the next Horde Night but after that I'll have to run some more missions and craft some ammo.

#Gaming #7DtD #7DaysToDie

Angela
I've been playing 7 Days to Die again, which is a survival crafting game where you are regularly getting jumped by zombies, and every 7 days a HUGE group comes at you during the Blood Moon.

I had been playing solo, mainly for the relaxation. At a certain point in survival crafting games, you plateau for a bit and things feel achievable and kind of comfortable. If I was fussier about my gaming, I'd probably work extra hard during those periods to increase my level so I could get better loot and be prepared for when things got hard again.

But I just float along, farming my corn and potatoes, collecting dew, smelting a bunch of metal and stone so I can make concrete and ingots....and then on day 5 of the cycle, I usually craft a ton of ammo, make sure my Horde Base is in good repair, and then I'll go on a short quest or I'll go mining or something until it's Horde Night.

HOWEVER. Friends on Steam can see when you are playing. And I've been pretty vocal about enjoying drop-ins, so a couple of folks from my main gaming server have started hopping on when I'm in game. Which is cool. At first it strained my resources - I had more than enough for myself, and I had about enough for two players, but having three? We had to go foraging.

But we are in good shape now and tonight we had a pretty great Horde Night. And then we did my very first Tier VI quest, and I didn't die! I cannot wait to see what rewards I get for that.

So it's less relaxing, because I'm playing with people who want to get ALL THE LOOT and kill ALL THE ZOMBIEZ but it's also fun because we're a group and we do pretty well together.

#7DaysToDie #Gaming

Angela
I've been playing a lot of the zombie game 7 Days to Die lately. I am trying it solo, and I am dismal. I'm doing it by myself so that I can learn the pieces I didn't know before, like how to make the workstations, how to make things IN the workstations, all the different things you can make and what they might be useful for....all that sort of thing.

But to get good stuff, you have to go on missions. And you really need to finish the mission successfully to get the whole reward.

I'm getting chomped pretty regularly. And the one time I thought I was finally going to get through a hard mission successfully on my own, I either took too long or I went too far outside the boundary and negated the mission.

It's more frustrating than I usually like my games to be, but on the other hand I am getting better and better. At least my Horde Nights have been going okay.

My main issue right now is that I have so much that I want to bring home from scavenging that I cannot carry it all, so I end up making chests and leaving them all over, marking them on the map, and going back for them later.
