Ah yes, instead of directly addressing that ads appear above search results, look almost exactly like actual search results, and their verification process for advertisers is regularly abused itself (plus “verified advertisers” appear to be breached regularly), lets give out checkmarks to domains.

hear me out: if you want to be #verified you need to convince an institution that affiliates with you (the newspaper where you work, your university, etc) to set up a mastodon server and issue accounts just like they do with email.
