"Meat is Murder," the second record by the Smiths, was released 40 years ago yesterday. Tiernan Cannon became a fan of the band long after it became obvious that lead singer Morrissey is a bad egg, "a battle-hardened culture warrior of the right wing, a man whose political views have slipped far beyond the point of contrarianism into straight-up chauvinism." The problem, says Cannon, writing for @PasteMagazine, is that Morrissey — back in the day, at least — was also an exquisite songwriter, capable of eliciting empathy, calling for compassion, taking the side of the underdog. Here's Cannon's story on what to do when the artist is a genius, but the human being is "pathetically, tragically flawed." What's your perspective — can you separate the art from the artist?
