Snow covers a maneki neko and statue of Hotei at Taizo-in.

Taizo-in is famed for its painting of a man trying to catch a catfish with a gourd...and so the temple has many catfish motifs hidden around the precincts.

The old road that connects Myōshin-ji (妙心寺) to Ryōan-ji, one of its many sub-temples, is known as Hō-zaka (法坂 'Dharma Hill').

In times past the path would be lined with monks going to and fro, but nowadays it is filled with visitors come to see Ryōan-ji's famous garden.

There is a saying in Kyōto at this time of year that goes "sankan shion" (三寒四温), "3 days cold, 4 days warm".

I think we may be deep in those 3 days...

The biting wind whipped snowflakes around me as I huddled deeper into my parka, the icy marsh crunching underfoot. I'd been tracking this great blue heron for days, hoping to capture its solitary resilience against the harsh winter. Hours blurred into a frigid, patient vigil until finally, there it was. A statue of steely blue and grey, perched motionless on a snow-laden log, a beacon of life amidst the white expanse.
