The grp compiled 2 lists, “#DEI Grants to Eliminate” & “DEI 10 Contracts to Eliminate,” detailing ~$380M from #NASA, #Labor Dpt, #Defense & #HHS. Most contracts were for #DEITraining, #ProfessionalDevelopment or workplace surveys. #Grants to cancel included $22.2M “#Nursing Workforce Diversity” program at #Health Resources & Services, to encourage nursing careers for minorities, & $8.35M “#FairHousing” initiative to promote racial #desegregation, incl’g by ending race based neighbor #harassment.

And as you might expect, the feedback is -- you know the pointing Spiderman giphy? Yeah, it's ... that.

What's consistent is that I hear from my people:

- You often sign up for these things with the best of intentions and then life (or work) happens, leaving you feeling disappointed by your ability to focus or participate (or not)

- You can't necessarily decide to have the energy for deep focus just because you scheduled it

I picked up a couple of what I'll call #ProfessionalDevelopment courses during the last week of sales. One, the #LearnDjango courses, I've been going through the past few days. The beginner course is more of a refresher, but it's still good and I look forward to it staying updated. I'm pretty excited to go through the other two courses as well

The other set unlocked up, the Hands on #Guile #Scheme course from #SystemCrafters, I've been slowly working my way through and digesting. Good stuff.

I couldn’t agree more on the topic of mandatory training for supervisors (and not because we’ve had that here for as long as I remember): it provides a basic level of assurance and support to new supervisors of our postgraduate researchers.

(The full report also points to the value of team supervision and the time pressure supervisors are feeling which I could also comment on at length!)

WonkheThere’s new research on how PGR students are supervisedThere’s notably no clear regulation on the postgraduate research (PGRs) student experience. PGRs in England are supposed to be “covered” by the Office for Students’ B conditions - but there isn’t anything specific to their experience and they are silent on supervision.

“Collaborations are, quite simply, the best way of doing science,” writes Kevin Bender, a professor of neurology, for @thetransmitter. He gives tips on finding the right people to work with and ensuring those relationships stay healthy. His advice is targeted at fellow neuroscientists, but applies to lots of different professions.

Part of being a successful professional in the USA is selling YOURSELF!

This is quite different from the other countries that I have worked in, and that is OK...

What are your tips for professional self-promotion?

My company doesn’t offer #TuitionAssistance, so I asked if I could submit a training request for #ProfessionalDevelopment instead. The cost for a semester is $2,083, which is less than the cost of sending me to any other training for a week. We could add sorely needed #Analytics expertise to our portfolio for the cost of 2-3 training classes/year.

Boss reply: “I wish we could. Tuition reimbursement is not offered.”

Do I submit the request & force him to reject it? Do I go over his head?

So, about me.

Like others, I set this account up in the wake of the purchase of the blue bird site. I've now flown the coup as of May 2023 (I think I got kicked off for not logging on for awhile). My original flight was back in November 2022 after the new bird owner got his feelings hurt over a parody of him and suspended the culprit of notoriety, I figured it was time to try out the leading alternative platforms. (Besides Mastodon I am still on Facebook, where the old people hang out.)

My bio pretty much sums me up. I am a Grandma. I have a Daughter who is an elementary school teacher, and a Son-in-law who is career U.S. Navy currently serving as a [deleted old rank] Senior Chief (promoted 5/24/23) on the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier. Out of respect for my childrens' wishes, I do not mention my grandchildren by name but refer to them as The Grandies. I have a Grand Sweetie and a Grand Cutie.

I hold a Ph.D. I am an Educator. I work in Professional Development. I currently live in #Maryland just outside of #WashingtonDC in the #DMV area.

I am a huge 🤓 and can never get enough of learning, gladly tumbling down rabbit holes when a topic intrigues me. My favorite hobby is 📚(#books #reading ). I love sightseeing at historic sights where I can totally geek out. I am a huge #Anglophile preferring #BritishTelevision to American (I feel the writing is extremely superior).

I am a life-long Liberal Democrat with some progressive bents. I am an active, involved citizen.

Lastly, I never mastered thumb typing. I try to catch the typos, but often fail. I own my mistakes. My apologies ahead of time.
