The PLA96114 is an IC that gets so hot that it burns itself Beyond 70°C the maximum that these ICs were allowed to reach. So when a broken C64 came in, the first thing I did is check, literally physically check if the PLA burnt itself out, desolder it, put in a socket, put the new IC on the socket with a heat sink.
That was the only way this IC could survive in the tropical climates which were reaching 38 Celsius at that point in time
