Ended the day back in Perugia, Umbria, Italy on 20 Oct 2024. Visited the nearby Cuparella Park and saw some flowers: a White Campion (Silene latifolia) and a Mallow (genus Malva). Also saw a magnificent sunset from a popular spot above the park: others were also there to get shots.

Description of the park. It says:

"Cuparella Park

The park’s paths through the garden connect Via Pellini with Via della Cupa above, which can be reached via the steps along the walls. In this public green area it is possible to admire significant sections of the mighty Etruscan wall, built of travertine blocks and dating back to the 3rd century B.C. It is interesting to note that only in this precise point of the city does the medieval wall coincide with the Etruscan wall; you can tell them apart from the different size of the stones.

Nestled between the lower blocks is a small secondary passageway reserved for pedestrians, called a “postierla” [“back door”], and dating back to the Etruscan period. The Tuscan landscape architect Pietro Porcinai contributed to the realisation of the area in the 1950s. He organised the particularly steep, and hitherto impassable, space by creating terraces connected by easily accessible paths.

In 2009-2010, the park was also equipped with an arena."

It drizzled last night in Perugia, Umbria, Italy. That, along with the cool weather, produced a wonderful foggy morning that filled the surrounding valley on 20 Oct 2024.

An evening look down Corso Vannucci, the main street in Perugia, Umbria, Italy, on 19 Oct 2024. Also visited the underground passageway under the Rocca Paolina, a Renaissance fortress built on top of the historic city centre.

"ROCCA PAOLINA

This underground structure, known as the Rocca Paolina (“Pauline Fortress"), is the result of the building on top of buildings that took place in different eras. In the Middle Ages (XII-XVI century), the tower-houses of some aristocratic Perugian families stood in this quarter. In the 15th century the most important of these buildings belonged to the Baglioni family, the most powerful in Renaissance Perugia.

In 1540, following the Salt War which broke out following the rise in the price of salt and Perugia's refusal to accept the Pope’s rule, Perugia lost its independence and was annexed to the Papal States. Pope Paul IlI had a fortress built to subdue the city definitively, commissioning the architect Antonio da Sangallo the Younger to build it in this area, constructing it over the medieval buildings. The fortress would be called the “Rocca Paolina” because Paul IlI ordered its construction. In order to speed up the works, which were completed in 1543, the fortress did not completely eliminate the existing buildings, but incorporated them instead, retaining many parts (walls, corners, streets, arches), thus creating the effect of virtually unique underground city.

Reached Perugia, the capital of Umbria, Italy, in the afternoon on 19 Oct 2024. A tour of the city includes Fontana Maggiore and the San Lorenzo Cathedral, which includes the Chapel of the Holy Ring.

A fountain in the centre of Perugia. It is circular and raised on a circular dais which feature tiles that describe the twelve months of the year, each related to a symbol of the zodiac. Behind the fountain is the San Lorenzo Cathedral.

A description of the chapel in English:

"The Chapel of the Holy Ring

The Chapel of San Giuseppe, better known as the Chapel of the Holy Ring houses the "Holy Ring", which, according to an ancient tradition, was the wedding ring of Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary. It is highly unlikely that the chalcedony ring housed here was worn by the Virgin Mary at the time of her wedding. Thus, it should rather be considered as a "memorial" of the event in order to arouse veneration of the Madonna and her husband, and a way to highlight the importance of the nuptial bond and its sacred and mysterious nature for | the Christian faith.

It may only be viewed twice a year, on 29th - 30th July and 12th September.

In the centre, you can see a painting depicting the Marriage of the Virgin by the French painter, Jean Baptiste Wicar, dated 1825.

Of interest from an artistic viewpoint, it should be noted that Pietro Vannucci, known as Perugino, painted the Marriage of the Virgin, one of his many masterpieces, for this chapel between 1499 and 1504. The painting is still housed in the city of Caen, in France."
