It's National Submarine Day! Today commemorates the acceptance of the USS Holland, a submarine designed by John Philip Holland and the first capable of running submerged for an extended period, by the US Navy back in 1900.

Built in Portsmouth, NH, the USS Thresher (SSN-593) was the fastest and quietest submarine of its day. Tragically, it was on this very day in 1963 that the Thresher ran into water pressure difficulties during deep-dive trials off the coast of Cape Cod and imploded, killing everyone on board.

Next month we'll be opening our new museum gallery, featuring exhibits that pay tribute to the Thresher as well as her 129 crew members who remain on "Eternal Patrol".
