I haven't been able to be online much this weekend. #Icestorms. Power outages. Cell service outages. Northern #Michigan looks like Armageddon backwash. 90% of my entire township was in the dark this morning. Yet with temps tonight forecasted to be around 15F, guess who's here with additional linemen crews?? #Canada. 😶 I am grateful. And ashamed. They are better neighbors than we are, despite everything.

Yesterday afternoon, when the meteorologist said the straight line winds heading our way with the severe thunderstorm could be stronger than a tornado, I headed to the basement.

Peak wind gust in Jackson, Michigan was 96 mph. Wind gust at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti was 63 mph.

"Wind speeds for an EF-0 tornado are between 65-85 mph, so some of these totals were even stronger."

Go Green indeed. 💚

"The rally coincided with the elimination of diversity, equity, and inclusion offices by the University of Michigan, following new policies from Washington that are affecting DEI offices at universities across the country. It also followed the arrest of Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish student at Tufts University, by U.S. Department of Homeland Security agents, one of the last of the nearly dozen international students arrested so far.

In an interview with The State News, MSU president Kevin Guskiewicz emphasized that ‘diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts will remain a priority despite threats from Washington.’ Although vacant positions and building projects could be rethought amid budget riskiness, Guskiewicz said he and his team will analyze the university’s financial situation concerning potential funding cuts."

"He said those were the old days and insisted that Detroit is doing fine now — it’s the rest of the world that is now cursed. “I’m going to call a truce this year,” he said. “Detroit, enjoy your hot streak.”

Detroit Metro TimesDetroit welcomes spring with its 2025 Marche du Nain Rouge parade [PHOTOS]On the Sunday after the vernal equinox metro Detroiters welcome spring with its annual Marche du Nain Rouge parade. A tradition since 2010, the event is something of a combination of Halloween and Carnival and is based on the Nain Rouge (“Red Dwarf”) of folklore said to have cursed the city. While early versions of the parade saw people don costumes and drive the Nain Rouge out of the city, over the years some historians have pointed out that according to the first recorded version of the tale from 1883, the imp should be respected, not reviled. This year festival organizers cast the Nain Rouge in a somewhat different light, and in a speech given at the foot of the Masonic Temple, Detroit’s most misunderstood mythical creature tried to turn over a new leaf. He said those were the old days and insisted that Detroit is doing fine now — it’s the rest of the world that is now cursed. “I’m going to call a truce this year,” he said. “Detroit, enjoy your hot streak.”
