I'll be attending #WisCon, the oldest and most well-known #feminist #SFF #conference online on May 23-26. This year, it's online-only, and it's also "pay what you can." The standard price is $25, but you can choose to pay less (they recommend $5, but even $0 is OK) if that works for you. I think a high attendance to help demonstrate that people value online conferences benefits us all.

As a guy who considers myself a #feminist ally, I really struggle with how much more I discriminate against #women online these days. If you present as a woman in her 20’s and you message me for any reason, we’re starting from the assumption that you’re actually a 40 year old dude with a crypto scam he wants to get me involved in. Not because I have negative feelings towards women, but because as an obviously straight white dude, that’s the pattern that every single scammer who contacts me uses. So if a man contacts me for something it’s far less likely to make my scam radar go off. I really don’t know what to do with that. Maybe this is what equality feels like? I can only assume that every time I talk to any woman online she’s assuming I’m a creep who eventually wants to send her unwanted dick pics. Even if I, like, just think her fanfic is cool or whatever.
