Every piece of Brahms I’ve listened to or played recently seems to have a desire, a need, to be slowed down by rubato, repeatedly and for long passages, in order to allow the mood to flower, so we can perceive it without being rushed.

This may say more about me than about Brahms, of course, but I will not be easily dissuaded from this view. It unlocks the heart of the music.

Example: Gidon Kremer and Valery Afanassiev’s recording of the G major violin sonata, which is much slower than average, but grows in the space that tempo provides.

Musical Interlude: Got some more Romantic music...not hearts-and-flowers romance, but capital-R Romantic. It's a genre of music that gets downplayed today, which is a shame.

"Piano Concerto No. 8," composed by Ferdinand Ries, performed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, with Christopher Hinterhuber on piano.

I see a lot of grumpiness and despair in my feed and, yes, from time to time I feel that, too.
One of my "safe havens" is music, as you know, and today I recorded this short #piano piece by Louise Farrenc for you.
"Impromptu", played on my 1909 Trautwein upright piano (will be tuned soon).
Maybe you'll find that comforting, or enjoyable, or at least distracting.

What is your favourite Beethoven piano sonata?

I'm binge-listening to all of Beethoven's #piano sonatas whilst doing some fairly menial work on a project and I'm finding I keep having to update my favourite one. Today it was definitely nr. 8, then nr. 12, and currently it's nr. 13! #ClassicalMusic
