Despite federal judges' orders to halt the Trump administration's federal funding freeze,
🆘the NIH has awarded few grants,
💥disregarding the advice of its own lawyers
-- and apparently prompting departures, according to The Atlantic

HHS officials have pressed the NIH to continue the pause on grants,
and NIH acting director #Matthew #Memoli, MD, has towed the party line,
according to the article, which was based on interviews with nearly a dozen current and former NIH officials.
❌The grant management officers who usually sign off on awards are afraid to do so, lest they lose their jobs.

The fight over funding has led to the departures of top NIH officials. On Feb. 10, after the urging of top HHS lawyers to resume payments, #Michael #Lauer, MD, the chief of NIH's extramural research division, issued a memo to resume funding grants -- only to subsequently resign.
That same week, former NIH deputy director #Lawrence #Tabak, DDS, PhD, announced he was retiring, instead of being forced into a demotion.
The departures "left many at the agency shocked and unmoored," the article stated, citing employees' concerns that if two high-ranking officials were forced out, no positions were safe.
"We're all still terrified for our jobs," one current official told The Atlantic. "No one knows who they can trust."

Today in Labor History February 24, 1912: The cops beat up women and children during the IWW-led Bread and Roses textile strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Three people died during the strike. Unknown numbers were injured. The police arrested nearly 300 workers during the two-and-a-half-month strike. The authorities framed and arrested IWW organizers Joseph Ettor and Arturo Giovannitti for murder.

Today in Labor History February 19, 1948: Joe Ettor died on this date. Ettor was an IWW union organizer, who helped spearhead the Lawrence Bread & Roses Strike of 1912. "If the workers of the world want to win, all they have to do is recognize their own solidarity. They have nothing to do but fold their arms and the world will stop. The workers are more powerful with their hands in their pockets than all the property of the capitalists. As long as the workers keep their hands in their pockets, the capitalists cannot put theirs there. With passive resistance, with the workers absolutely refusing to move, lying absolutely silent, they are more powerful than all the weapons and instruments that the other side has for attack." Ettor was active in the 1907 Portland lumber strike, the 1909 McKees Rocks Strike, the Pennsylvania coal strike of 1909-10, and a Brooklyn shoe factory strike in 1910-11.

Employers feared "Ettorism". This 1913 anti-union cartoon from The American Employer depicts an IWW organizing drive as "a volcano of hate stirred into active eruption at Akron, by alien hands, which pour into the crater the disturbing acids and alkalis of greed, class hatred and anarchy. From the mouth of the pit rise poisonous clouds of suspicion, malice and envy to pollute the air, while from the cracked and breaking sides of the groaning mountain flow streams of lava of murder, anarchy and destruction, threatening to engulf in their path the fair cities and fertile farms of Ohio."
