UN concern over "extremely disturbing” reports of entire families being killed in western #Syria amid clashes between #Assad regime loyalists and security forces

"The killing of civilians in coastal areas must cease immediately"

"About 125 civilians have been executed by government security forces in north-west Syria during a rolling two-day battle with loyalists to the ousted Assad regime, a Syrian war monitor reported on Friday.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), a human rights monitor considered independent and credible, documented “large-scale field executions of men and young adults, without any clear distinction between civilians and combatants”, in north-west Syria.

SNHR has documented the killing of at least 240 people since Thursday, including 100 Syrian security forces and 15 civilians at the hands of Assad loyalists.

The fighting resulted in Syria’s deadliest day since the toppling of the Assad regime three months earlier."

Despite making up only 10% of the country’s population, the #Alawites exerted outsized influence during the #Assad family’s >50-yr rule. The Alawites, who practice an offshoot of #Shiite Islam, dominated the #RulingClass & upper ranks of the #military under Assad.

The new govt called on all members of Assad’s forces to relinquish their ties to the fmr govt & surrender their weapons at “reconciliation centers.” While thousands have taken part in that process, some…have not.

The flaring tensions have become a critical test for #Syria’s new leaders, whose rebel coalition toppled the #Assad regime & installed an #Islamist transitional government that has sought to consolidate control.

The coastal provinces have posed a significant challenge for the #SunniMuslim led govt as it exerts its authority. The region is the heartland of Syria’s Alawite minority, including the #Assad family.

Thousands of #protesters flooded streets in the cities of #Latakia & #Tartus to demand govt forces stand down & withdraw from the countryside, the first wide-scale #demonstrations against the new authorities….

By Fri morning, the govt had deployed more security personnel to the coast to bolster their forces there as they tried to regain authority over a handful of towns & villages where armed gunmen had effectively seized control overnight.

At least 70 people were killed & dozens wounded in overnight clashes between the new authorities in #Syria & gunmen loyal to the ousted #dictator #BasharalAssad …in the bloodiest skirmishes since the collapse of the #Assad govt.

The fighting unfolded in #Latakia & #Tartus Provinces, longtime strongholds for Assad…. It came hours after the killing of 16 security personnel by Assad loyalists in the Latakia countryside on Thurs afternoon….

Yes, they’re talking about the same stockpiles that #Assad had “destroyed” decades ago, which #Russia had “vouched” for, and then Noam Chomsky, John Pilger and Seymour Hersh were convincing everyone that it had been true.
