I am a sociolinguist and a lot of our research on real, authentic language usage, especially among young people, depends on web crawlers.

Your anti-crawling activism actively sabotages research about e. g. queer language, gender, racism, hate speech and social structures.

Yeah, consent is the highest authority, and "AI" shouldn't be used to replace or underpay workers.
But at some point some of y'all really just act like anti-organ donation activists.

Announcing
AITRAP,
The AI hype TRAcking Project

Here:
poritz.net/jonathan/aitrap/

What/why:
I keep a very random list of articles about AI, with a focus on hype, ethics, policy, teaching, IP law, some of the CS aspects, etc., now up to 1000s of entries.

I decided to share, in case anyone is interested; I'm thinking of people who like @emilymbender, @alex, & @davidgerard . If there is a desire, I'll add a UI to allow submission of new links, commentary, hashtags.

If you're in the greater #Boston area next week, come down to WPI in #WorcesterMA on Thursday for the culmination of my artist residency! I'll be talking about building a visual design language and running a workshop related to the complicated world of #AIEthics in the #CreativeEconomy #Art 😵‍💫 I don't know that we'll have any answers but I think this will be a great exercise in asking the right questions 🙌 12pm talk, 4pm workshop, 2nd floor Innovation Lab

Pew research: Grifters more optimistic about grift than the general public being unwillingly grifted. "For example, the #AI experts we surveyed are far more likely than Americans overall to believe AI will have a very or somewhat positive impact on the United States over the next 20 years (56% vs. 17%).

And while 47% of experts surveyed say they are more excited than concerned...that share drops to 11% among the public."

In an interview (in German/dubbed) for ARD’s Weltspiegel (23.03.2025), Prof. Aimee van Wynsberghe highlights how AI systems, while transformative, consume vast amounts of energy and resources like water. This raises vital questions about sustainability, ethics, and environmental impact. It’s crucial to address these issues in research and public debates.
