I've seen news reports saying that when H5N1 influenza reaches a chicken farm, the virus spreads quickly and has a death rate of 98-99%.

What I haven't seen discussed is whether chickens are inherently extremely vulnerable to H5N1, or whether the extremely high death rate is due to the ghastly conditions that chickens are kept in on factory farms. Does anyone know the death rate for pet chickens who are kept in good conditions and are treated by a veterinarian when sick?

@Lkdc #H5N1

No clue here. I would like to know as well.

But given the gutting of CDC and science in the US, and the anti-science bent at play, we are less likely to hear answers.

With the recent adaptations of H5N1 that kill ducjs and geese in flight, I suspect that the lethality is from those changes.

@Lkdc
There's likely more rapid airborn transmission in confined flocks in buildings, but flu is also spread in feces and fluids (shared water vector) and spreads fine among wild non-confined waterfowl.
